Know Thyself (Without the Eye-Roll)
“Know thyself” is ancient Greek for referring to a deep self-awareness and understanding of one's own nature, abilities and limitations. Socrates famously declared that "the unexamined life is not worth living”

The ancient Greeks were onto something with their favourite bit of wisdom: “Know thyself.” Socrates even went as far as saying that the unexamined life isn’t worth living — which is basically philosophy-speak for “don’t just drift through your days half-asleep.”

Self-awareness sounds lofty, but really it’s about noticing your own thoughts, emotions, and habits before they run the show. It’s clocking the fact that you spiral into anxiety when the WiFi drops in a meeting, or that you always say yes when you mean no. The more honest you are with yourself, the more chance you have of making choices that align with your values instead of autopilot reactions. If I’d had that level of reflection in my twenties, I’d have wasted far less time drifting from one half-baked career move to another.

The benefits aren’t subtle. You make better decisions when you’re actually aware of why you want something. Your relationships improve when you recognise what triggers you and how your behaviour impacts others. And let’s not forget confidence — when you know your strengths and weaknesses, you stop pretending to be someone you’re not and start leaning into who you are. That’s the version of you that people actually respect.

The tricky bit? Self-awareness isn’t a one-time exercise. It’s a loop of reflecting, checking your ego, sitting with your gut, and staying curious. Sometimes that means journaling, sometimes asking for honest feedback, sometimes catching yourself mid-eye-roll and asking, “Why did that annoy me so much?” The goal isn’t perfection — it’s authenticity.

Humility is part of the package too. “Know thyself” isn’t about becoming some enlightened guru. It’s about admitting what you don’t know, being aware of your blind spots, and committing to keep learning. The moment you think you’ve nailed it, you’ve missed the point.

Ultimately, this is about alignment. When your choices reflect who you truly are — not who you think you should be — life feels a lot less like damage control and a lot more like living.

So, know yourself.
