What Actually Matters (and What Doesn’t)
A Core Values exercise can help you identify and clarify the fundamental principles that guide your decisions, behaviours, and life choices.

If you’ve ever caught yourself mid-email thinking, “Why am I even doing this?” then you’ve brushed up against your core values. They’re the invisible rules that quietly steer your choices, shape your reactions, and leave you either fulfilled or frustrated depending on whether they’re being honoured or trampled all over.

The thing is, most of us don’t stop long enough to actually name them. We drift, we react, we roll our eyes at colleagues, and we chalk up the Sunday dread to “just how work is.” But often it’s not the workload that exhausts us — it’s the way our work or life clashes with what we really care about. That’s why a little values check-in can be game-changing.

Think back to the highs and lows of your life: the moments when you felt most proud, and the ones that had you quietly fuming. Those emotional spikes usually point directly at the values that matter most to you. Maybe freedom, balance, growth, creativity, or integrity. Whatever they are, when you’re in alignment with them, things flow. When you’re not, you feel drained, stuck, or secretly Googling new jobs at 2pm.

The coaching trick here isn’t to make a perfect list and laminate it. It’s to reflect on what truly drives you, to notice when you’re living in line with those values, and to gently course-correct when you’re not. Prioritise the ones that feel essential, and let them guide your decisions instead of defaulting to autopilot. And remember, values evolve — what mattered in your twenties may not matter now, and that’s okay.

So, before you tumble headfirst into another week of meetings that “could have been an email,” take five minutes to ask yourself: Am I actually living in alignment with what matters to me? Because life’s too short to keep betraying your own values in exchange for being “a team player.”

So, apparently the Doomsday Clock has moved forward again.
